This year, Australia will host the International event Big Dance – taking over the reins from the UK who initiated the event in 2006.

Big Dance is set to run throughout Australia in both metro and regional locations on International Dance Day – 29 April 2018, aiming to raise the profile for and participation in dance worldwide.

What is Big Dance?
Big Dance 2018 has been choreographed by acclaimed Indigenous choreographer Frances Rings and New Zealand born Craig Bary. There are three groups who perform separate choreographies – Black T-shirts, White T-shirts and Red T-shirts. These all come together to create an 8-minute dance that anyone can learn and be involved in – the more the merrier!

Where will it be performed?
Across Australia, events of various scales have been planned for Sunday 29th April – from an outdoor car park in Darwin, to a large-scale event in Cathedral Square Sydney. In WA, we want to showcase our own amazing dance groups by making it a spectacular opening for our Dance Day celebrations and invite YOU to get involved in Big Dance 2018.

How can I learn it?
Anyone can learn Big Dance. There are two ways to learn:
1. You can watch and learn online via tutorials on the website – visit www.bigdance.org.au/learn
2. If you would prefer, we can arrange a ‘Teach the Teacher’ session. This is designed for a group of dance teachers and other community leaders who would like to gain skills in how to teach the choreography to their classes or community groups they run. (Please note a fee for our WA Big Dance Teaching Artist applies for this workshop, so consider forming a group to reduce costs. Sessions available for students groups as well.)

Why should I take part?
Big Dance provides an international platform to perform with thousands of others across Australia. Not only that, but it is an opportunity to learn choreography by esteemed Indigenous choreographer Frances Rings, share Australian culture with the world and to be an active part of your ‘local’ and ‘virtual’ community. It is a chance to put WA on the map within our existing Australian Dance Week programs.

Further, the Big Dance performance in WA at Dance Day will be filmed and broadcast at Perth Cultural Centre during Australian Dance Week, and through the Big Dance networks nationally and internationally, meaning your group/school name and logo will be featured to an audience of thousands.

How do I start?
Firstly, let us know that you are keen to be involved by emailing po.wa@ausdance.org.au

Then, select which of the three (Black, White or Red) sections of choreography you would like your group to learn, or if you have 3 groups that can do one each, all the better! Feel free to rope in friends, family and anyone else who might like to join in. Learn the dance, either online or with the assistance of our Big Dance teacher.

Come to Dance Day with your coloured T-shirt and be ready to perform and enjoy! We will schedule a rehearsal on stage on the day of the performance, to coordinate and space groups on stage, once all numbers are confirmed.

For more information about the event – check out www.bigdance.org.au, and please let me know if you have further questions.

We hope you will take up this opportunity to be involved in a national community project supporting dance at its core!
