Dance Curriculum Support Opportunities

About This Project

Ausdance WA is committed to providing professional learning and resources to teachers of dance across genres and contexts.

With the School Curriculum and Standards Authority’s release of the 2018 Set Solo for the Year 12 Dance ATAR course and the rollout of The Western Australian Curriculum and Assessment Outline – The Arts – of which Dance is a subject from Pre-primary to Year 10 (reporting from Semester 1, 2018), we have planned a significant program of teacher professional learning opportunities and resources. The program aims to ensure that teachers are well equipped to deliver best practice dance teaching for students and participants in primary and secondary schools, in studios, and in community and social contexts.

Devised and presented by Phillippa Clarke, this three-part workshop series aims to combine biomechanical principles of the body with improvisation and performance skills to improve confidence and outcomes in preparation for ATAR Dance practical examinations. Teachers will have an opportunity to place themselves into the mind and body of the student and experience the rigour of thinking, responding and creativity expected of the Year 12 dance student.

These workshops will:

  • Develop the dancer’s kinetic and visual imagination to improve understanding and manipulation of choreographic devices and creative processes;
  • Create opportunities to devise and perform improvised and choreographed solos that link performance tasks with visual and spoken responses;
  • Investigate different ways of responding to and talking about dance making and performing to deepen involvement and understanding of their own and others creative processes and performances.

Workshop Themes

  • Lines of Motion: A development of Motif and Space
  • Drawing with the Body: An exploration of Energy and Emotions
  • Playing with Gravity: An investigation of Momentum and Time

All workshop activities and responses will reference the dance language and concepts outlined in the WACE Year 11 and 12 Dance Syllabus.

Workshops can be taken individually, but ideally should be completed as a series of three.

Subject to interest, Ausdance WA will consider facilitating a second workshop series later in 2018.
