SUMMARY:WHORL - Art Gallery of WA
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Lifespan Dance and AGWA\, WHORL is a new seated dance performance choreographed by Paige Gordon\, to music created by Louis Frere-Harvey. Inspired by the spiralling shapes found in coastal shells\, botanical structures and our own fingers/footprints\, the formation and movements reflect the winding and unwinding pathways. \nWHORL raises our awareness of the simplicity of a spiral motif\, honouring the environment with colour\, movement\, joy and hope. WHORL builds on the success of the ‘Exquisite Bodies’ performance in Seniors Week last year\, which was a performative dance response to Bruno Booth’s exhibition collaboration with Gallery 09 creatives. \nCommunity and virtuosic dancers are welcome to be part of the WHORL performance. Once registered\, you will receive a link to the choreography to learn in your own time and place. \nWe will come together for a Community Rehearsal before performing the work twice on Thursday\, November 14th afternoon (2:45pm and 3:30pm). Register soon – numbers are limited. Audiences are welcome to the performances.  Let’s celebrate Seniors Week 2024!

SUMMARY:Squared-OFF
DESCRIPTION:Squared-OFF \n‘squared-OFF’ is a double bill of dance theatre created by OFF-base Dance’s Artistic Director Tyrone Earl Lraé Robinson. This carefully curated season of dance is a meditation on age-old rites of passage and the transmutation of body\, mind & spirit as we transcend from pubescence into adulthood\, life into death. Each show is its own journey into identity\, mortality and transformation. ‘Madre Muerte’ [‘Mother Death’] (performed by Tyrone Earl Lraé Robinson) is an old man’s spiritual goodbye to the before and embrace of the after\, and an achingly beautiful eulogy from the ones he leaves behind. ‘Acid Trip’ (performed by Bernadette Lewis) is a psychedelic take on the reality altering experience of transitioning into adulthood. The two full length solo works\, will be presented back to back at Fridays Studio\, as a part of the squared-OFF season\, 18th of September until the 22nd of September. \nMadre Muerte \n‘Madre Muerte’ (“Mother Death”) is a vehicle to compassionately talk about death and an invitation for audiences to grapple with their mortality in a healthy and beautiful way. Choreographer Tyrone Earl Lraé Robinson uses his own spiritual practice as inspiration for the work. His beliefs follow the idea that death is not the opposite of life but rather an integral part of the same journey\, “When we are met with mother’s touch we can surrender to it peacefully”. Death is universal\, inevitable\, and something that will always exist as long as there is life\, but people typically fear death and don’t often talk about it openly. This work encourages us to grieve what is lost but also celebrate what was. It is a cathartic celebration of life and death and will serve as both comfort and provocation for audiences. \nAcid Trip \n‘Acid Trip’ is a surreal\, witty and heartfelt multidisciplinary performance work that explores the disparity between conventional societal expectations and the struggle for reclamation of identity. Playfully subverting the archetypal hero’s journey\, ‘Acid Trip’ tumbles down a psychedelic rabbit hole to search for modern meaning and purpose in the quest for self-discovery and truth. While we move towards embracing more progressive values and lifestyles\, why are so many of us grappling with crippling loneliness\, anxiety\, and isolation? Can we look to the past to unshackle ourselves of invisible and antiquated taboos?

SUMMARY:Shelley Lasica: WHEN I AM NOT THERE
DESCRIPTION:The work of Shelley Lasica reveals a sustained exploration of dance\, movement and the varying contexts in which they can occur. WHEN I AM NOT THERE provides an important occasion to reflect on forty years of Lasica’s choreographic practice and is the first project of its kind in Australia. \nWHEN I AM NOT THERE features a mise-en-scène comprising new and existing elements\, including contributions from the artist’s long-term collaborators and a new ensemble commissioned for the occasion and performed live for the duration of the gallery’s opening hours. \nThe 2021 recipient of an Australia Council Dance Fellowship\, Lasica has developed this new work with a team of ten other artists\, including LJ Connolly-Hiatt\, Luke Fryer\, Timothy Harvey\, Rebecca Jensen\, Megan Payne\, Lisa Radford\, Lana Šprajcer\, Oliver Savariego\, François Tétaz and Colby Vexler. The performance-exhibition presents components from Lasica’s archive of earlier works\, including costuming\, objects\, soundscapes and text. \nConsolidating ideas and experiments that Lasica has been developing throughout her career\, WHEN I AM NOT THERE contributes to discussions around choreography in the gallery space and activates the tension between what it means ‘to perform’ and ‘to exhibit’. \nWHEN I AM NOT THERE is accompanied by a substantial monograph featuring new writing from Erin Brannigan\, Justin Clemens\, Claudia La Rocco\, Robyn McKenzie and Zoe Theodore. Positioning Lasica’s oeuvre within Australian contemporary practice as well as international contexts\, it is the first monograph published on an Australian choreographer and includes a comprehensive account of her performance and exhibition history alongside extensive documentation drawn from her archive.

SUMMARY:SILENCE by Karul Projects
DESCRIPTION:Is this the Commonwealth of Australia? Yes? This is your Landlords speaking! \nThrough raw physicality\, humourous skits\, and a power anthem soundtrack\, we disrupt the silence of a 250+ year struggle. The same questions echoed through generations. SILENCE pulls the Treaty conversation out from under the rug and slams it back on the table. Because the conversation about a TREATY cannot be silenced in Australia. \nFunny and irreverent and reverberating with power… If you think you know Australian contemporary dance\, you haven’t seen SILENCE. With thrashing live drumming and a raw aesthetic\, Thomas E.S. Kelly has combined intimate storytelling with significant moments in Australian history as SILENCE interprets an ongoing conversation for a new generation. \nThere’s SILENCE between the stars as the Emu travels across the night sky. There’s SILENCE in the dancer’s energy when they hit the cut\, the rupture between rhythms and movement creating a vibrational glitch for the spirit world to enter. It’s also the deafening SILENCE under White noise. \nWe have marched across our Country. We have had promises made and promises broken. We stand on a stage\, to the beating of a live drum kit\, as bodies thrash through white noise to continue the conversation. Towards action. Towards resolution. \nJhindu Lawrie’s audacious rock drumming full of dynamism\, grunge and raw power calls back to Thomas E.S. Kelly’s choreography\, in brash\, yet vulnerable and visceral scenes\, with Kelly’s trademark charm and wit interspersed in between.

In the intersection of half-researched histories\, half-remembered mantras\, and tiny facts in time and place\, a profound connection emerges. \nIn WHITESNAKE3000\, we find the community we wilfully turned away from\, and although we may never find it again\, this re-telling\, stitches another version into the evolving history of worship to the White Snake. \nWHITESNAKE3000 is devised by Zendra Giraudo alongside theatre makers Joe Paradise Lui and Briannah Davis\, poet Andrew Sutherland\, and movement artist Emma Fishwick. \n‘A brave and complex new dance theatre work to heal the fractures of mixed race experiences.’ – Patrick Gunasekera\, SEESAW MAGAZINE \nThis season of IN.HOUSE is curated by Raewyn Hill and supported by City of Perth. The production was first presented as part of The Blue Room Theatre’s 2023 Summer Nights Season.
