Professional Workshops with Gary Lang at West Australian Ballet

This January West Australian Ballet (WAB) will host professional workshops with acclaimed choreographer and the Artistic Director of NT Dance Company, Gary Lang.
Gary Lang is currently in town working with West Australian Ballet on the development of Milnjiya, Milky Way – River of Stars, a ground-breaking new work of Aboriginal dance meeting classical ballet for WAB’s 2018 Ballet at the Quarry season. In the lead up to the season, Lang will lead workshops for professional and pre-professional dancers at the West Australian Ballet centre in January. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn from a choreographer at the forefront of aboriginal ballet choreography.
Lang is a First Nation Larrakia man whose family extends to Yirrkala in East Arnhemland. Gary’s work blends traditional Aboriginal dance, contemporary and classical ballet and has been described as hitting “clear note(s) of beauty and tenderness” (The Guardian) and “specialising in incredible moments of partner work” (ArtsHub).
Each session will begin with a warm-up based on yoga, followed by ballet barre and contemporary technique. The workshop will then progress to learning a series of cultural steps and gestures derived from traditional dance, and work on repertoire from one of Gary’s upcoming pieces. Participants will be asked to bring their own understanding and experience of culture.
When: 10 am – 1 pm daily*, Wednesday 10 – Saturday 13 January 2018.
Where: West Australian Ballet Centre, 134 Whatley Crescent, Maylands
Who: This opportunity is open to professional dancers and pre-professional dance students at a tertiary institution (ages 16+)
Price: $30 per session
*Participants may attend as many sessions as they wish but must stay for the duration of each session. Each daily session is available for purchase separately.

About Milnjiya, Milky Way – River of Stars
This is a ground-breaking collaboration between NT Dance and West Australian Ballet (WAB), fusing Aboriginal dance and classical ballet in a world premiere for WAB’s 2018 ‘Ballet at the Quarry’ season. Gary’s vision for Milnjiya is to create a work around his people’s traditional song cycles and includes a traditional song man, didgeridoo (Yidaki) player and an Indigenous opera singer (Deborah Cheetham) integrated into the performance as part of the song cycle representing the spirit world.
This project is supported by the Australian Government Australia Council for the Arts, and Catalyst, the Australian Arts and Cultural Fund, as well as NT Dance Company, The Darwin Entertainment Centre, and the Northern Territory Government.
