WAAPA’s resident dance company, LINK, is extremely excited to present Shanghai Bolero at the Fremantle Arts Centre from the 21st to 24th October.
Perth dance icons Sue Peacock (ADT, One Extra, Dance North, Expressions Dance Company) and Claudia Alessi (Buzz Dance Theatre, HotBed Ensemble, Melbourne Theatre Co) join LINK graduates, Laura Boynes, Bernadette Lewis, Carly Armstrong and Isabella Stone, along with the fabulous LINK dancers to perform Shanghai Bolero by acclaimed French Choreographer, Didier Théron.
Built around Maurice Ravel’s iconic orchestral piece Bolero, this captivating contemporary dance piece uses repetition and duration to explore ideas of sensuality. Comprised of three interpretations of the same score, the three male and ten female performers are initially separated before coming together in the third section. It’s in these final stages that Didier Théron uses stillness to convey the anxiety that desire and perceptions of the human form provoke. After so much movement, the group’s stillness is jarring, dramatic and powerful. The season commences with a new work by LINK Artistic director Michael Whaites. 59009 Tonight showcases the skills of the talented LINK dancers. Set to the smooth sounds of Michael Bublé, the work plays with romance and humour and will have audiences tapping their feet and bopping in their seats. Set amongst the Plane trees of the FAC’s front garden, Shanghai Bolero, promises to deliver a mesmerizing evening of dance for all the senses.
