Ausdance WA is funded by the State Government of Western Australia through the Department of Local Government Sport and Cultural Industry.
At the end of every year, WAAPA’s graduating dancers get to show off their choreographic talents in a series of public performances of their original dance works.
This year’s show, Unleash, will showcase the contemporary dance pieces of ten 3rd Year Dance students, set to original music created by WAAPA’s Composition and Music Technology students. Performed by students from across WAAPA’s Dance course in the intimate setting of the Dolphin Theatre, Unleash runs from Tuesday 25th to Friday 28th August, with a matinee on Saturday 29th August.
The student choreographers featured this year are Marcus Alessandrini, Tanya Brown, Morgan Crowley, Caitlin Gilchrist, Kate Grima-Farrell, Tia Hockey, Ayesha Hocking-Katz, Emma Joubert, Kathryn Lawrence and Anthony Rinaldi.
The students’ evocative, inventive dance works encompass a wide range of themes, from serious issues and social concerns through to whimsical, comedic subjects.
In his piece, Humanae Transcendentium, Marcus Alessandrini explores how human communication might evolve in the future. Ayesha Hocking-Katz’s evocatively titled work, Waist Deep in Shattered Glass, tackles the notion of control, both external and internal, and its effect on the human body. Morgan Crowley’s Leo examines the concept of survival of the fittest, while Tia Hockey’s work Crease was inspired by the idea that humans have a self-destructive compulsion that inevitably leads to chaos.
In a lighter vein, Kate Grima-Farrell’s Happy Hour uses the simple notion of dancing at parties to delve into questions of social acceptance, judgement and peer pressure. Tanya Brown has devised a quirky dance piece in which she compares humans to walking washing machines, full of dirty secrets!
With four more works on the program, Unleash provides an insight into the interests and concerns of these talented young artists.
Jam-packed full of original, thought-provoking works from ten exciting young choreographers, Unleash promises to be a highly entertaining evening of contemporary dance.
