Livable Cities
Join
Serena Chalker to ponder livability, cities and the arts
. From January-May, Serena participated in The School – a post-academic project, based in the City of Hasselt in Belgium, set up with the idea of bringing together designers and artists from around the world to develop new approaches to “re-thinking the city”: The City of Hasselt proposed 8 different challenge areas from their portfolios for the designers and artists to react upon. This unique and sometimes challenging project was designed to support creative disruption of the system, looking at how the arts can work with, or against the city, promoting creativity, sustainability, design and liveability.
For the first time since before the mining boom, more interstate residents are leaving Perth than arriving. What defines the livability of Perth, and how do creativity and vibrancy (beyond a “small bar” scene) keep residents engaged and committed to the future of a city. For Perth to survive beyond the mining boom, how can we fuel a creative future, and how do other local artists view the role of arts in sustainable, livable cities.
Join us for a free informal discussion and brainstorming about the events that transpired, its successes and failures, and what are the implications for Perth. Bring your thinking caps, and let’s share our ideas for a creative economy.
