Each year Ausdance WA, with the support of School Sport WA and Act-Belong-Commit, host Dance in Country Week at the King Street Arts Centre (KSAC). Dance In Country Week gives regional students the opportunity to learn from highly experienced dance artists in a range of challenging dance activities including contemporary technique, choreography and two other cultural dance forms.
This year 80 students attended the KSAC studios between 25 – 28 of June, from the following schools:
- Australind Senior High School
- Bunbury Senior High School
- Broome Senior High School
- Dalyellup College
- Esperance Anglican Community School
- Esperance Senior High School
- Geraldton Senior College
- Kalgoorlie-Boulder Community High School
- Karratha Senior High School
- Manea Senior College
- Margaret River Senior High School
- Newton Moore Education Support Centre
Students were lead by Scott Elstermann, who was the Artistic Team Leader and oversaw the entirety of the sessions. Elstermann championed the delivery of the Act-Belong-Commit message and our Ausdance WA Safe Dance practices. Points were awarded to schools based on their technique, ability, attitude and teamwork. Additionally, each team’s ability to collaborate, take risks and extend their movement comfort zones were assessed and scored.
The week entailed workshops and classes from:
- Sofia Pratt – Flamenco
- Ian de Mello – Krump
- Eve Newton-Johnson – Contemporary/Choreography
- Andries Weidemann – Ballet
- Jacqui Hume – Pilates
- Bernadette Lewis – Stretch and Strength
- Laticia Wright – Yoga
- Shona Erskine – Health and Wellbeing
The school teachers also attended Professional Learning sessions including a facilitated discussion with Judy Hendrickse (John Curtin College of the Arts) and a practical session of Hip Hop/Urban led by Una Genuino. An outing was enjoyed by all the schools to a viewing of a professional workshop run by STRUT and a tour of the State Theatre Centre.

There was a meet and greet with dance industry professionals which aimed to facilitate a Q+A opportunity for regional teachers’ and students’ awareness, insight and connection with the professional dance sector in Perth and to provide information on further training and other pathways in dance. At the end of the week the schools were able to showcase their choreography against each other. Allowing for a healthy competitive environment where each school is challenged to achieve their personal best. The performance was held at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and was adjudicated by Andries Weidemann, Nina Levy and Ian de Mello. This year Bunbury Senior High School were awarded both the winners of Dance in Country Week as well as the overall winners of the 90th Senior High Schools Country Week Carnival.
