Latin Dance Productions are the lucky recipients of a DAIR placement in 2018.

Latin Dance Productions specializes in performing Latin and Brazilian dances. Their performance company has two teams; Kuerazo Latin Dancers who perform the couples routines in Salsa, Tango & Gafiera, and Esplendor Samba who perform the Brazilian dances Samba no Pe and Malandro.

In addition to performing at corporate, community and private events, Latin Dance Productions has self-produced two dance theatre shows; La Vida Es Un Circo (Life is like a Circus- 2011) and Os Cinco Sentidos (The Five Senses – 2014 as part of the Fremantle Festival).

With the onset popularity of Brazilian Samba in the last 3 years, audiences have naturally been drawn to the glitz and glamour of the sequin and feathers of the Samba dancers. During this time with the allure of Salsa wavering, Latin Dance Productions noticed confusion and/or misunderstandings where audiences who have Havana Cuban events have been requesting Brazilian Samba dancers, thinking that they are one in the same. This has caused quite an inner conflict for Latin Dance Productions, as artists, who have a commitment to representing the authenticity and integrity of the dances and its cultural origins.

Additionally, 8 members of their Esplendor Samba team attended the Inaugural Australian Samba Congress in Sydney this year. They learned from the Masters and Queens of Samba no Pe, Afro, Malandro and Samba de Gafiera. It deepened their understanding, raised awareness of the cultural significance of each dance, assisted with the connection to the roots and the appropriateness of the Samba dances.

From the inner conflict and the learning from the Congress, Latin Dance Productions are motivated and inspired, and feel compelled to create two shows; a Havana Cuban dance show and a Brazilian dance show.

“This is in effort to educate and inform, to express our passion and love of Cuban and Brazilian dances and to share this with current and new audiences.”

– Latin Dance Productions

Latin Dance Productions started their residency placement at WAAPA Studio 5 on July 21st and have made fantastic progress so far. Li-Anne Carroll, the director of Latin Dance Productions have kept Ausdance WA informed on their work and we are so inspired by the results we have seen so far. Their goal for the residency is to provide our principal choreographers focused time and an intensive creative session, provide the opportunity to create with and on our company dancers and to create and develop the choreography for at least half of the show content which would otherwise take 6 months.

While the DAIR residency does not need a performance outcome we can’t wait to see their new Havana Cuban dance show and Brazilian dance show.
