What are the backgrounds and teaching philosophies of the team, and what inspires you to create?
We are a collective of six independent dance artists actively working across the Boorloo (Perth) dance and arts sector. Our teaching philosophy centres on the importance of a youth dance community and mentorship between young people and industry professionals. Our workshop offers both contemporary technique and creative dance. We have created these workshops as a way to foster a space where artists and young people learn alongside each other. Our six artists rotate facilitation duties and share their own interests and artistic practices. When we aren’t leading the class, we dance and create right alongside the young people as equal participants, as we believe there is something to learn from everyone in the process.
What is the best part about working with young people?
Young people have an abundance of creative ideas and such refreshing energy! Providing a platform for them to celebrate and amplify their voices is an incredibly rewarding experience for us. We love that arts environments can foster new friendships and, in these spaces, young people from a range of ages have a chance to connect and make friends, which is special. It’s always magical to witness lightbulb moments when young people find a connection to dance that feels new and exciting for them. The way they express themselves at school or at home can be totally different to how they show up in dance spaces, they might meet another side of themselves that they really love being with.
If a young person is curious to try, but has not had any experience in contemporary dance, what is your advice?
All dance needs is curiosity – if you feel curious that’s the best entryway and we are here to welcome you in the door to discover what might just be your new favourite thing! Starting something new or different can feel scary but we know when you move your body, get lost in motion, in music and big ideas, things start to feel very exciting! We will love to welcome you and our advice is always give it a go, bring your unique self!
